637RA040 Mack CX Vision radiator

Posted On: July 14, 2020 By: CSC Radiator

Over the course of our sales history of CSC and affiliated companies, we have literally sold thousands of radiators for Mack CX vision trucks. These radiators are also used in Volvo VV and VNLs. They are some the most mature and reliable aftermarket truck radiators in the market and the failure rate has been much lower than the 1% industry average. However, began to see an abnormal amount of failures in Mack CX Visions starting last year.

At first, we thought it was the usual culprit. . . coolant. Being based in a tropical environment, the vast majority of the warranties claims are the result of substandard coolant or just the use of plain water. We define substandard coolant as coolant that does not meet the specification of the engine manufacturer. However, we were confirming that our customers were using quality coolant and following the recommended change intervals. We then thought that perhaps the customers were not installing their new Mack CX vision radiators into their frames correctly. However, when we inspected the frames, they seemed ok. They even were happening if we installed them in the frame at our plant. We even did test for electrolysis and came up empty.

The curious issue was that they were all concentrated with the same client but different trucks. Then we had another client call for a new unit, and we sent one of our head techs to dig further to ascertain what could possibly be the problem. This particular client was extremely diligent with the maintenance of his fleet. He was always careful to change all the parts needed to do the job properly. It was speaking to this client that we realized what the problem was all along.

There is a radiator support rod that goes from the radiator to the chassis on the side of the engine. As the trucks get older and worn due to rough Puerto Rico roads, this bushing wears out. Once worn, the allows the radiator to become loose and move around violently. This shaking leads to the failure of the radiator, usually at the lower corners. The customer then purchases a new radiator which fails at around 6-9 months depending on use. The situation then continues to repeat itself until the customer is convinced that he is purchasing inferior product. The reality is that any unit will fail prematurely because the root of the problem is a $25 bushing that caused the failure from the beginning. We now offer these bushings along with Mack CX vision radiators.
